There are 4 major terms that you will need to know with division.

**Dividend** ÷ **Divisor** = **Quotient** (if doesn’t go in evenly, there is a **Remainder**)

Dividend is the number that is being divided.

- Example: 12 ÷ 3 = 4 (12 is the dividend)

Divisor is the number that you divide by.

- Example: 27 ÷ 9 = 3 (9 is the divisor)

Quotient is the answer when you divide one number by another.

- Example: 14 ÷ 2 = 7 (7 is the quotient)

Remainder is the number that is left over, or too small to be divided by the divisor.

- Example: 19 ÷ 5 is 3 with a remainder of 4. ( 3R4 or 3 4/5 )
