Division Terms

There are 4 major terms that you will need to know with division.

Dividend ÷ Divisor = Quotient (if doesn’t go in evenly, there is a Remainder)

Dividend is the number that is being divided.

  • Example: 12 ÷ 3 = 4  (12 is the dividend)

Divisor is the number that you divide by.

  • Example: 27 ÷ 9 = 3   (9 is the divisor)

Quotient is the answer when you divide one number by another.

  • Example: 14 ÷ 2 = 7   (7 is the quotient)

Remainder is the number that is left over, or too small to be divided by the divisor.

  • Example:  19 ÷ 5 is 3 with a remainder of 4.    ( 3R4 or 3 4/5 )
